TFP – “Time for Photos”
I do TFP shoots on occasion; it’s a good career-building opportunity for both the model and the photographer.
However, because everybody seems to have a different idea of what TFP involves, I have included an outline of the way I handle these shoots on the right. If you feel that this is fair, I would be happy to consider a TFP shoot with you, pending a review of your existing work to determine how well your look will fit with my current projects.
I have developed my terms through a survey of other local photographers and a good deal of personal experience. Please see this article to compare my terms to commonly used TFP conventions.
Process Steps
- Location and styling costsI arrange any location costs or other creative fees. You provide your own wardrobe and make-up, unless I’m trying out an elaborate styling idea, in which case I will cover your styling costs.
- Model releaseYou sign the documents on the right, including a model release granting me permission to use images of you commercially. For images that include nudity, a more restrictive release will be used to limit my usage to portfolio, art, and self-promotion.
- Usage licenseYou will receive a license to use/reprint any image that I provide you for promotional use. This license will include limited transferability, an important distinction for performers who may need images for posters, playbills, etc. I'd like to receive 3 copies of any printed matter produced through this license.
- The photo shootOn a TFP shoot, I’ll usually be shooting for my own ideas, but I will always work with you to get a few shots that would be good for your portfolio; the same goes for the portfolio of our stylist(s), if present. The hope is that at the end of the day everyone is tired from working hard, smiling because of their contribution, and getting something they can use.
- Proof galleryAfter the shoot, I will post small versions of all printable-quality shots in a private gallery. You will then be able to peruse them and provide me with a list of your favorites, in order of preference.
- ProcessingI will process and retouch your top choice from each distinct styling immediately. Then, each time I edit one of my favorites for my portfolio, I will also send you a copy.
- Final imagesYou will receive printable-resolution jpegs of any image that I edit for portfolio use. This will guarantee you at least one image, and as many as seven or more, depending on how many images I find I can use—a more varied and successful shoot will result in more final images.
Documents
I treat TFP shoots with the same seriousness as a paid gig. This means that there will be paperwork to ensure that everyone's bases are covered. Four documents must be signed prior to our photo shoot. Each serves a specific purpose. You may view these documents below.
Usage LicenseThis document allows you to use images that I create.- Model ReleaseThis document allows me to use images that I make of you.
- Photo Shoot ItineraryThis document specifies the particulars of the photo shoot, as well as who’s responsible for what, to avoid any misunderstanding.
- Indemnification AgreementThis document acknowledges that you’re responsible for your own safety, property, and comfort during our photo shoot.
Models who are not adults of full age must be accompanied by a parent or guardian to sign similar documents on their behalf.
Common Misconceptions
- TFP is not a way to get free work done. If you have a specific goal and want to art-direct for your portfolio, I will be happy to quote you a rate for a photo shoot.
- TFP is not a way to get a CD full of images. I can’t process every shot, and I don’t release unprocessed images for public display—doing so gives viewers a false impression of my capabilities. Besides, you only really need a single great image from each look—any more than that is unnecessary padding.
- TFP is not a way to get a bunch of photos for your paysite’s image gallery. What you’re looking for is a content exchange, which is slightly different. Please contact me for details.
